Cased Carved and Painted Wooden Model of the Clipper Ship Sovereign of the Seas, America, late 19th/early 20th century, three-masted model with full rigging, wood and metal details, the hull painted green with black above the water line, housed in a contemporary brass mounted glass case on a mahogany base, overall ht. 32 1/4, wd. 14 1/2, lg. 42 1/2 in. Note: The clipper ship Sovereign of the Seas, was launched in June, 1852, by Donald Makay of East Boston. Her home port was New York. She was 258 ft. in length,her breadth was 44 ft. and she weighed 2421 tons. In June 1853, she sailed from New York on the same day the Cunard S.S. Canada left Boston. In the five-day period of June 25-30 the 'Sovereign' outsailed the steamship by 325 miles. She sank in the Straits of Milacca in 1859.
