Portrait of Edward Reed Dorr (1808-1880) Seated in a Fancy Chair Boston, early 19th century, unsigned, oil on panel, depicts a boy wearing a white ruffled collar and a high-waisted green jacket trimmed with gold buttons while sitting in an early 19th century child's side chair, paint decorated with red and green as may be seen in the floor covering with similar hues, while holding a piece of fruit and patting a dog against the backdrop of a fruit-laden tree, on poplar panel, 31 1/2 x 21 1/2 in. , in original giltwood frame. Condition: Untouched. Provenance: Edward Reed Dorr, the sitter above, lived in Boston as a tailor with a shop on Franklin Avenue in 1830, six years later he moved his shop to Cornhill Street. He married Eliza Pittman who was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. They lived in Chelsea, Massachusetts in the 1850s and later Boston. Their son, S. Edgar Dorr (1854-1937), moved to the Savin Hill, Dorchester, Massachusetts home in 1904 with his wife, Nettie Wyer, formerly of Hyannis, Massachusetts. He was the chief engineer of the Boston Sewer Department until 1920 and lived in the Dorchester home until 1933 where this portrait of his father as a child was recently found.
