Landscape Painted Iron Panel from U. S.S. Brooklyn's Smokestack, America, 1898, the panel which was damaged in battle is painted with a scene of the vessel in Cuban waters, brass below stamped "From U.S.S. Brooklyn's Smokestack, 1898," (paint losses), 10 x 14 1/2 in. Note: The U.S.S. Brooklyn was the flagship of "Flying Squadron" under the command of Commodore Winfield Scott Schley. On July 3, 1898, she was a key vessel in the Spanish-American War "Battle of Santiago," which resulted in the loss of the Spanish fleet in the Caribbean. She was struck twenty times by enemy shells.
