Polychrome Painted Leather Fire Bucket, Rhode Island, 1807 the fire bucket with leather collar and handle, "No. 3", the central reserve painted with the name "John J. Linzee" above "1807" flanked by the motto "OPEM CONFERRE PARATI", indistinct embossed maker's marks near seam, (handle repair, with losses), ht. 13 in. to top of collar. Note: This fire bucket is purported to have belonged to the oldest son of Captain John Linzee (1743-1798), who was commander of the Royal Navy Brigantine HMS Beaver, stationed in Rhode Island. He was a principal member taking part in The Gaspee Incident, one of an ever-increasing number of violent conflicts between Colonialists and British forces in and around Boston that led to the start of the American Revolutionary War.
