Provenance: From the estates of Mary Ann and Frederick Lippitt, Providence, Rhode Island. N.B. George Hitchcock, son of portrait painter Charles Hitchcock, was born in Providence, Rhode Island, and attended both Brown University and Harvard Law School. By 1877, however, Hitchcock abandoned law, and moved abroad to begin his career as a painter. He studied with Gustave Boulanger at the Academie Julian and then at The Hague. Hitchcock soon settled in the town of Egmond aan Zee, near Amsterdam. There he painted the vibrant and colorful landscapes of the Dutch tulip fields for which he is best known. Egmond developed into an artist's colony, centered around Hitchcock and fellow American expatriate, Gari Melchers. Although Hitchcock remained in the small town of Egmond for the rest of his career, he was honored internationally; he was elected to the National Academy of Design in New York in 1909, and was a member of Vienna's Akademie der Bildenden Künste as well as the French Légion d'Honneur. There is a minute loss l.l. (within the area of yellow tulips). The work would benefit from a cleaning.
