Charles Christian Nahl (American, 1818-1878) On the Mountain Signed and dated "Charles Nahl 1849" l. l., New York stencil on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 23 1/2 x 19 in. (59.7 x 48.3 cm), framed. Condition: Craquelure, surface rubs, surface grime. N.B. Charles Christian Nahl was born in Kassel, Germany, and attended Kassel Academy before moving to Paris, and then ultimately to the United States. He moved to California during the Gold Rush and settled there, living and working in Sacramento and San Francisco for the remainder of his career and emerging as one of leading artists from California of his time.
