Johann Mongels Culverhouse (Dutch, 1820-1891) Market Before Dawn Signed and dated "J. M. Culverhouse 1873" l.r., a Edwin Dechaux, New York, canvas stencil on the reverse. Oil on canvas, 26 x 36 1/4 in. (66.0 x 92.1 cm), framed. Condition: Patch reinforcements, retouch, varnish inconsistencies, abrasions with losses, surface grime. N.B. "Candlelight Painter" Johann Culverhouse is recognized for his scenes of everyday life under moonlit skies or glowing lights from candles. Culverhouse was born and raised in Rotterdam, but came to America around 1849, exhibiting in and around New York. He returned to Europe around the time of the Civil War, and although he worked and exhibited both in America and abroad, Culverhouse's painting style remained explicitly Dutch, drawing from 17th century genre scenes. The work is NOT lined, although there is signicant damage (tears/losses) to the tacking edges. Small patch reincorcement c.r. Mild scattered abrasions throughout, but abrasions with losses predominately to edges. Retouch is broad glazes and scattered small areas throughout, some areas of retouch include leaves of the tree u.c., small area just above figures c.r. (with patch reinforcement), areas within the figures, and small areas along the bottom edge. The work might benefit from a gentle cleaning.
