Louis XI, King of France (1423-1483), Signed document, dated 1478, one page, on vellum, countersigned, concerning the finances of the kingdom, framed with portrait, 6 1/2 by 11 in. Note: Louis XI, famous for his political cunning was known as the "L'universelle aragne", or the Spider King, in deference to his ability to weave a web of intrigue amongst friend and foe alike. He was perhaps the first truly modern French monarch having broken the Feudal system in France and dispensing with the Chivalrous Code of Conduct favored amongst Knights of the period. His affection for economic growth throughout the classes helped pull France out of the stagnant Middle Ages.
