Merrimac Pottery Green vase Newburyport, Massachusetts, 1897-1908 Pinched rim on swollen cylindrical form of terra-cotta clay with watermelon textured glaze, marked with paper Merrimac Ceramic Company label, which was used from 1900-1901, ht. 9 1/2 in. Merrimac translates to "sturgeon" in the Native American language. Nickerson drew his inspiration from nature, which is evident in his glazes, and the influences of the Newburyport river can be seen in his work. Due to the limited time that this work was produced and the quality of the glazes, it is both highly collectible and hard to find.
