Art Nouveau Enamel and Diamond Orchid Brooch, Tiffany & Co. , Paulding Farnham, 1890, the ronde bosse enamel form of naturalistic design depicting a Central American variety, flexibly-set old European-cut diamond highlight, 18kt gold mount, 2 1/2 x 1 7/8 in. , (minor enamel restoration by Tiffany). Note: In 1889, Paulding Farnham designed a series of twenty-four varieties of orchids, whose cultivation was an obsession of the wealthy during the Gilded Age. Farnham's orchid brooches were a triumph of the Paris Exposition of that year. This orchid, no. 8, is illustrated in "Paulding Farnham: Tiffany's Lost Genius", p 58.
