Dr. McLaughlin's Latest Improved Electric Belt, 1870s, with two terminals, copper battery chain, control for altering the current, brass buttons securing the canvas belt with gilt stamps for Stamp End and Right Side , and another electric belt with plaid silk covering and sprung loop, (lacking batteries). Note: These belts, examples of 19th century quack medicine combined with a new interest in electricity, produced a weak current when soaked in a salt solution. They were advertised as a cure for multiple ailments, from nervous disorders, to rheumatism, impotency, and paralysis.
