Needlework Sampler, "Hester Middleton wrought this work in the Eleventh Year of her Age January the 12 1765," worked in silk threads on a linen ground, with rows of alphabets over a pious verse and the "Ten Commandments" lower border with birds and potted plants, (toning, light stains), 15 1/2 x 9 1/2 in. , in a period wooden frame. Note: According to notes affixed to the reverse, Hester Middleton was born in 1754 and died in 1789. She was the sister of Arthur Middleton, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. Their father was Henry Middleton, President of the Continental Congress. She married Dr. Charles Drayton of South Carolina.
