Alfonso Ossorio (Filipino/American, 1916-1990) Woman Unsigned. Watercolor and ink with wax resist on paper, sight size 16 3/4 x 10 3/4 in. (42.5 x 27.3 cm), framed. Condition: Rippling, glued between mat boards. Provenance: Ex-collection of playwright Hugh Wheeler, New York. N.B. Alfonso Ossorio was born in Manila in 1916, but moved to the United States as an adolescent. He studied both at Harvard University and the Rhode Island School of Design. Greatly influenced by Jean Dubuffet and Jackson Pollock, Ossorio's work involves elements of Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, and Art Brut. Seeking to develop a visual language through connections with innocence and raw emotions, his work rejects descriptive and figurative imagery in favor of free and impulsive expression. This piece is done in wax resist, a technique Ossorio began to use around the middle of his career, to give his work new stylistic freedom.
