Reynolds Beal (American, 1867-1951) Sailboats Signed and dated "Reynolds Beal 1942" l. r. Oil on canvas, 16 x 19 3/4 in. (40.6 x 50.2 cm), framed. Condition: Good. N.B. American Impressionist painter Reynolds Beal is best known for his maritime views with vivid colors and lively compositions. Beal had a lifelong love of yachting and boating, and studied naval architecture at Cornell University before turning to painting. He studied art at the Art Students League, the Shinnecock School, and in Europe. He also frequently worked alongside fellow artists including H. Dudley Murphy, Childe Hassam, and his brother, Gifford Beal. He settled in New England but traveled extensively, often painting seascapes along the Eastern seaboard. He was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Society of American Engravers, the Salmagundi Club, National Arts Club, and an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design. Additionally, Beal helped found the Society of Independent Artists and the New Society of Artists.
