Oil, graphite, and collage on canvas, 48 x 48 in. (121.9 x 121.9 cm), framed. Condition: Extremely minor scattered craquelure, mild and unobtrusive surface grime. Provenance: Acquired from the artist. N.B. Japanese-born artist Shusaku Arakawa first studied medicine and mathematics at Tokyo University before turning to art. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1960 and settled in New York, where he continued his painting career, often using his art to comment of the corruption of Japanese society. His work fuses his scientific background with elements of Dadaism, presenting objective and analytical images that lack the emotive quality of Expressionism. Arakawa frequently uses words in his paintings to address the ambiguity between the verbal and visual elements of human perception.
