Plains Beaded, Quilled, and Painted Hide War Shirt, c. third quarter 19th century, made from two "big-horn" sheep hides with tail and dew claws left on, decorated with multicolored quilled strips with pony trader blue seed bead frame lines, red trade cloth bibs, red trade cloth wrapped ermine tail drops, quill-wrapped hair drops, and partially painted with blue pigment, (quill loss), lg. 45 in. Provenance: Collected in the 1870s in Minnesota by Robert C. Towsley while on a railroad survey, then descended in the family.
