George III Silver Three Bottle Presentation Standish, London, 1808, ovoid, with gadroon and shell rim, raised on four stemmed ball feet, set with three frames, and fitted with colorless cut glass bottles with silver rims and lids, hallmarked 1814, with maker's mark RG, likely Robert Garrard, the tray with later presentation engraving from Gathorne Hardy, dated 1877, lg. 15 in., approx. 40 troy oz. Note: The presenter of this standish, Gathorne Hardy, or Gathorne Gathorne-Hardy (1814-1906), was the 1st Earl of Cranbrook, and a prominent British Conservative politician. He held office in every Conservative government between 1858 and 1892. In 1878 he was raised to the peerage as Viscount Cranbrook, and was further honored in 1892 when he was made Baron Medway, and Earl of Cranbrook, both in the County of Kent.
