Trumpet in B flat, Martin Company, Kenosha, c. 1980, Model T3460 "Committee", the medium bore horn, the hammered brass bell engraved MILES with vine motif, the baked blue epoxy lacquer finish engraved with stars and crescent-moon motif, with angled mouthpiece branded GIARDINELLI NEW YORK, SPECIAL, with case. Provenance: Ex-collection Miles Davis, Collection of George Benson. "This is a standard Martin CommitteeT3460, one we made for Miles. However, I can't tell you the exact date other then that it was made in the early 1980's. It was engraved with his personal request for the crescent moon, stars on blue lacquer. As I recall, it was very difficult to get the blue lacquer to cover, so we gave it four coats of dark blue lacquer. The color was more of a black with a bluish, purple tinge. The person that did the wonderful engraving was Howie Hartnal, who is now retired. He also has pictures of the work he did on the horn. It was shortly after this model that Miles requested some changes which I customized to his specifications on later models."
