"CHARLESTOWN" Two-Gallon Stoneware Jug, Frederick Carpenter, Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1812-c. 1827, swollen ovoid vessel with reeded neck and base, and applied ridged handle, the shoulder impressed "CHARLESTOWN" twice in large and small capital letters above two impressed hearts to indicate gallon capacity, ht. 14 in. Literature: Accompanying the jug is a photocopy of an article published in The Magazine Antiques, June 1972, by Lura Woodside Watkins, author of Early New England Potters and their Wares. In it Watkins identifies Frederick Carpenter as the maker of this and other "Charlestown" marked pottery, the history of early Boston area potteries, and illustrates a similar heart decorated covered jar.
