Assembled Five-Piece Silver Tea and Coffee Service, John W. Forbes, maker, New York, 1808-38, comprising tea and hot water pots, covered sugar, creamer, and waste bowl, with bulbous oblong bodies, (the waste bowl with a square body), applied leafy vine rim band, and molding below rim with grape clusters and leafy crescents, applied cast acanthus leaves with claw and ball feet; the coffeepot with hinged lid with cast dolphin finial, angled hardwood handle, and S-curved spout, the teapot with cast reclining lion cub finial and angled hardwood handle, the sugar bowl with cast reclining lion cub finial, sugar bowl and creamer with applied angled strap handles with dogwood blossom and leaf motifs, each piece with engraved "TEG" monogram; the teapot, sugar bowl, and creamer with "J.W. Forbes" in a rectangle stuck once or twice on the underside of the body, the teapot and sugar bowl with additional hallmarks, the waste bowl with indistinct "C-GF" mark in a rectangle, (possibly for Colin Van Gilder Forbes), the hot water pot unmarked, (imperfections), ht. 4 1/2-9 1/4 in., total approx. 99 troy oz.
