Two Needlework Samplers Worked by Sisters Elisabeth and Susannah Parmenter, possibly Framingham, Massachusetts, 1837, 1839, both samplers worked in silk threads on a linen ground and stitched in a similar pattern, each depicting rows of alphabets above a pious verse, over a reserve with each girl's signature stitches, Susannah's done in an oval reserve: "Wrought by/Susannah S. Parmenter/Aged 14 yrs/August 8th 1839," Elisabeth's in a heart-shaped floral reserve: "Wrought by/Elisabeth Parmenter/Aged 13/1837," enclosed in sawtooth borders and further surrounded by two striped flower-filled baskets stitched on the top borders, grape clusters and flowering vines on the side borders, and grape clusters, flowers and butterflies on the lower borders; (minor toning, fading), 20 1/2 x 17 1/2, 20 x 17 1/4 in., mounted in later molded wood frames.
