Federal Mahogany Inlaid Desk Bookcase, possibly Southeastern United States, early 19th century, the top section with flat-molded cornice above a frieze inlaid with an urn, meandering vines, and stringing, above two hinged doors with recessed panels bordered by stringing and quarter fans, opening to an interior of adjustable shelves, valanced compartments, and drawers, with three exterior short drawers below, set into a projecting lower section, the fold-out lid with central inlaid conch shell bordered by stringing and quarter fans, and a case of three graduated conformingly inlaid drawers, all resting on a base incorporating a hidden drawer flanked by conch shell inlaid supports, on turned feet, replaced brasses, refinished, (restored), ht. 86 1/4, wd. 42, dp. 22 in. Note: interior inscribed "W.E. Howe, Belvedere, Ill." cornice replaced, secondary wood tulip poplar, missing pull on one of the sliding supports.
