American School, 19th Century, after Jacques-Louis David (French, 1748-1825) Portrait of Napoleon at St. Bernard Pass. Unsigned, an inscription previously on the reverse, now obscured by relining, is pictured in a photo attached to the reverse and reads: Painted by Nath'l H.Capen Nov- 1836." Oil on canvas depicting the general, red cape billowing around him, riding upon his rearing horse, his index finger pointed upward to the top of the surrounding snow covered peaks, with lines of distant troops marching up the sides, 54 x 44 in., in a contemporary molded giltwood frame. Condition: Relined, scattered retouch. all over scattered retouch, repaired tears with associated retouch to horses neck and rump and possibly other smaller tears, which are hard to detect because of relining,. few tiny retouch spots to his face, cape and gloves.
