Needlework Sampler, "Catherine Egan her work finished in the 9th year of her age 1814," probably England, the sampler worked in silk threads on a gauze ground, with two rows of alphabets over "A Prayer for Wisdom," centered with her stitched signature, above a verse entitled "Vice," the lettering surrounded by an assortment of motifs including birds, stags, potted flowering plants, bowls of fruit, trees, crowns and butterflies, also the initials of probable family members, all enclosed in a budding vine border, (toning, fading, stains, repairs), 17 x 13 1/2 in. , in a molded curly maple frame. Provenance: Ex collection of Robert Roche. approx. 8 rewoven small areas of repair (1/4- 1/2 in. dia.) to the ground fabric, fairly unobtrusive, using similarly colored threads, 1/2 in. lg. tear at center of bottom row of bottom verse barely noticeble.
