American School, 19th Century "Skating on Torsey Pond. " Unsigned. Gouache on artist's board, depicting a wintry New England landscape with several figures skating on a pond, two wielding hockey sticks, and three figures on skis against a hilly backdrop with houses, barns, trees and buildings, with distant mountains, 12 1/2 x 16 1/2 in., in a black painted wooden frame. Note: Two notes found with the painting relate that the painting was done by Livinia Webber New England, 19th century, and titled "Skating on Torsey Pond," "about 1835, gouache." The other note is inscribed "Skating on Torsey Pond is a New Hampshire winter scene painted in 1837..." Exhibited: The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, By and for the People: American Folk Art From a Private Collection, October 3rd -November 14th 1976, retaining exhibition label. Craquelure in the "snowy" areas, one tiny spot on the lower left house with a pigment loss, we think the painting is later (late 19th/early 20th c.) than what the accompanying notes relate, because of the costume style portrayed.
