John William Hill (American, 1787-1844) Boston Harbor Circa 1840. Charles Mottram, engraver (British, 1807-1876). 1857. Identified in inscriptions in the matrix. Engraving proof, with hand-coloring on cotton rag paper, sight size 27 x 40 in., matted and mounted in a contemporary molded wood frame. Condition: Repaired tears and losses, several into image, not examined out of frame. * Examined out of frame: -no engraving stone mold evident, probably a lithograph. Other inscriptions read: "Painted by J.W. Hill."; "Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1857 by B.F. Smith in the Clerks Office of the District Court of the District of Massachusetts."; "Printed by McQueen." -approx. 10 repaired tears, 4 repaired losses. -paper laid onto thin cardboard backing, hinged at the top. -top margin: 1 in. and slightly more in some areas. -right and left.margins: about 7/8 in. -bottom margin from image edge to edge of paper 1 5/8 in., trimmed just below "BOSTON." -repaired tear u.l. about 3 in. long, 2 in. into image, with 1/1/2 x 1 in. loss repaired on margin. -repaired tear u.c about 5 1/2 in. lg. and about 4 in. into image. -repaired tear about 1 1/2 in. lg. at u.c. margin. -repaired tear and loss u.r. corner, tear goes into image about 3/4 in. -several other small repaired tears and losses on margin edges.
