Benjamin Franklin Smith, lithographer (American, 1830-1927) New Orleans from St. Patrick's Church 1852. "J.W. Hill & Smith del.," Smith Bros. & Co., publisher (New York). Identified in inscriptions in the matrix. Lithograph with hand-coloring on paper, 26 1/2 x 42 1/2 in., matted and mounted in a contemporary molded and gilded wood frame. Condition: Repaired tear into image u.r. to c.l., and l.r. margin, not examined out of frame. Extensive but unobtrusive repaired tear, starting at u.l. about 12 in. to rt. of image edge, down about 10 in. into image from top, then left about 11 1/2 in. from left edge of image. 11/4 in. tear, l.r. edge, visible to mat edge. *Examination out of frame: Paper laid onto thin cardboard backing, hinged at the top; top margin: 1 7/8, right. and left margins: 2 1/8 in.; bottom margin from image edge to edge of paper 4 1/8 in.; loss to upper rt. margin about 10 1/2 in. down from top edge, repaired with paper and blended with white pigment, about 8 x 2 in. with one angled area- 2 3/4 x 1/2 in. into image from this repair. -one bifurcated repaired tear about 3 1/2 in. at l.r. margin with replaced corner. -several small approx. 1/2 in. repaired tears along lower paper edge, also several creases in this area (hidden behind current mat). -light moisture stain line about 1/3 from left from top to bottom, more prevalent in margins. -several rubbed areas to sky slightly noticeable when examined closely, may be enhanced with pigment.
