Carved and Painted Model of the Boston Clipper Ship Southern Cross, America, c. 1880, fully rigged three-masted vessel, with carved wooden details including anchors, lifeboats, kegs, cannon, painted black with gold details, and gold below the waterline, her name applied in raised type to the stern, mounted on a wooden stand, ht. 23 1/2, lg. 35 1/2 in. Note: According to an article in The Boston Daily Atlas, May 5, 1851, describing the vessel: "She is named after the most beautiful constellation of the Southern hemisphere ... Messers. E. & H.O. Briggs, of South Boston, built her,...She is owned by Messrs. Baker & Morrill, of this city, and will be commanded by Capt. Levi Stevens, an experienced and skillful sailor." The model was cleaned and restored 11/14/1996.
