Green Painted Pine Sailor's Box, America, mid-19th century, rectangular box with hinged lid, applied molding on lid and base, painted inscription "Barque Homer. " in black lettering on the front, (paint wear), ht. 12, wd. 21, dp. 12 1/2 in. Note: According to family history, the box belonged to the husband of a distant relative named Abby Pittman. He was a New Bedford whaler and seaman. An old ship record states that the "Homer" was a "Barque of Boston, J.S. Rowe, master, burthen 420 tons..."
