American School, 19th Century Memorial to Washington. Signed and dated "Let virtue pay her homage by A. D. Reid --- 1834" l.r. Watercolor and pen and ink on paper, depicting a grieving woman placing roses on a monument inscribed "Sacred to Washington" beside a river with figures in a boat fishing, with distant buildings, 22 1/4 x 17 1/2 in., in a period black painted molded pine frame. Condition: Toning, two small losses l.l. Exhibited: The Minneapolis Institute of Arts, By and for the People: American Folk Art From a Private Collection, October 3rd -November 14th 1976, retaining exhibition label. Losses in lower left (in the blue); two others in the margin at the bottom; some pigment imperfection in the upper right.
