Cast Zinc and Molded Copper "Index" Horse Weather Vane, attributed to J. Howard & Co., West Bridgewater, Massachusetts, c. 1860, the front portion of the body of cast zinc, with molded hollow copper mid and hind sections, applied copper ears, mane, and corrugated tail, mounted on an iron strap base fastened with copper clips, weathered yellow sizing surface, with traces of gilding, further mounted on a wooden base, (minor imperfections), ht. 19 1/2, lg. 27 in. Literature: A similar example is illustrated in The Art Of The Weathervane, by Steve Miller, Schiffer Publishing, Pennsylvania, 1984 on p. 20. rusted iron bar, clips are copper, with some separation, some joinery separation on the two hooves and legs going up about 2 in., which are mounted to the iron strap, ears have been resoldered back on.
