Gerrit A. Beneker (American, 1882-1934) Bill Rollins, Engineer Signed and dated "Gerrit A. Beneker 1920" l.r. Oil on canvas, 32 1/2 x 30 in. (82.5 x 76.2 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, craquelure. Provenance: From the collection of the Fuller Museum of Art. N.B. Gerrit Albertus Beneker was born in 1882 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. In 1912, he went to Provincetown to study under Charles Hawthorne. He spent his early years as an artist painting portraits. Instead of executing the portraits of upper class women, as was the trend during that time, Beneker chose instead to portray working-class people such as laborers and fishermen that lived near his summer home in Truro, Massachusetts. Beneker made his living not as a portraitist but rather as an illustrator. He created illustrations for magazines as well as war posters.1 1. "Gerrit A. Beneker."
