Paul Howard Manship (American, 1885-1966) Goliath Heron Initialed and dated "PM (c) 1932 AC" l. r., stamped "Priessman Brauer & Co. Munich Bavaria, 3" l.r. Gilt-bronze sculpture, height 11 1/2 in. (29.2 cm), on a low marble base. Condition: Wear to surface. Literature: Edwin Murtha, Paul Manship (The MacMillan Co., New York), 1957, number 312, page 178. N.B. In 1923, Manship was commissioned by the New York Zoological Gardens to create an entrance gateway. The gateway was to commemorate Paul J. Rainey, a long-time patron of the gardens and the donor of many of the facility's animals. The gateway design flanked the entrance with two giant trees, filled with cast birds and animals. This heron was designed with nine other birds to fit in one of those trees.
