English, Early 19th century. Important and highly unusual Regency mahogany,desk, the rectangular top cross-banded with satinwood and ebony stringing, the case to one side containing a secretaire drawer with fitted interior of 7 small drawers, over a central cupboard door flanked to each side with three graduated drawers, all beaded, cross-banded and inlaid with individual locking mechanisms, the opposing side with simulated drawers over a central cupboard door on molded plinth base on casters. Height 39.25", width 55", depth 28.75. Provenance: Purportedly a headmaster's desk from Charterhouse School in Surrey. Charterhouse, originally The Hospital of King James and Thomas Sutton in Charterhouse is a collegiate independent boarding school situated at Godalming in the English county of Surrey.
