English, 19th century. "Figures in a Tavern", oil on canvas, signed lower right "W.M. Hay". Painting depicts an 18th century scene of male courtly figures in a tavern, two leaning against a wall by an open window engaged in conversation with a sword resting on a bench nearby, a single figure seated at that table, and three figures in a back room drinking from goblets. Plaque on verso reads "Presented to Mr. T.E. Young by the Parishoners of Enderby in recognition of the services he has rendered as choirmaster of the Enderby Adult School Male Prize Choir for the last five years. July 21, 1906. Framed 31.75" x 41.75", unframed 22.75" x 32.5".
