Portrait Miniature of a Young Woman, attributed to Samuel P. Howes, (Lowell, Massachusetts, 1806-1881) watercolor on ivory showing a half-length portrait of the woman facing left, wearing a black dress and gold necklace and earrings, 2 1/2 x 1 7/8 in., in a period molded giltwood frame. Condition: Paint smear left side. Exhibited: This portrait miniature was exhibited and pictured in the exhibition catalogue Samuel P. Howes Portrait Painter, Whistler House Museum, Lowell, Massachusetts, April 6-May 31, 1986, pictured on p. 27. Note: Samuel P. Howes was a self-taught portrait painter, first in Boston from 1829 to 1835, and exhibited portraits at the Boston Athenaeum Art Exhibition in 1833 and 1834. He moved to Lowell, Massachusetts and remained there painting portraits, and landscapes and also doing photography, until his death in 1881.
