Portrait Miniature of Eliza Carolina Rice Blake and Child, attributed to Moses B. Russell, (American, circa 1810-1884), Unsigned. Subject and artist identified in inscriptions on paper backing, watercolor on ivory, circa 1840, depicting a woman wearing a black dress with a baby in a white dress holding a black bird toy, 3 1/2 x 2 1/2 in., in a relief-molded floral gilt gesso frame. Condition: Very good. Note: Moses Russell , born in New Hampshire, was active for more than 50 years painting miniature portraits and figure painting. He lived in Boston from 1834 to 1853, and later lived in New York and Philadelphia. He exhibited at the Boston Athenaeum, Boston Mechanics Association and the American Institute of the City of New York. In 1839 he married Clarissa Peters, also an accomplished miniaturist.
