Child's Painted Fanback Windsor Side Chair, New England, late 18th century, the serpentine crest with notched terminals above six spindles and vase and ring-turned stiles on shaped seat and conformingly turned splayed legs and swelled stretchers, old dark brown paint with yellow pinstriping and stenciled lyre in the crest, (minor imperfections), ht. 34, seat ht. 14 in. Literature: This chair is illustrated in "The Windsor Style in America Vol. 2", by Charles Santore, p. 81, plate 60. Santore states "This relatively small 'youth chair' is in the Connecticut tradition, highly idiosyncratic. The crest rail is V-notched, and the contour of the seat on the front edge is nearly round. The turning pattern of the medial stretcher can also be found on certain Connecticut rush-bottom chairs."
