American School, 19th Century Portrait of Two Children Playing at Table with their Pet Pugs. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1835, depicting the two children seated at a round table, probably a boy and a girl, wearing identical pink off-the-shoulder dresses with black trim, white pantalettes, and yellow shoes. The boy pulls a toy soldier on horseback with one hand, while a group of four soldiers marches on the tabletop. In the other hand he holds a pear. The girl holds a pink rose in one hand, and in the other she holds a string attached to a colorful ball which she tugs to entice one of the two pugs scampering on the floor to play, 21 1/2 x 17 in., in a period ogee mahogany veneer frame. Condition: Relined, retouch. Provenance: Bill Lewan, 1970s.
