Attributed to Manly L. Lundberg (Minnesota, 20th Century) Smiling Woman Wearing a White Hat, Coat, and Muff. Unsigned. Carved and painted walnut figure, ht. 12 1/2 in. mounted on square wooden base with chamfered edges. Condition: Craquelure to varnished surface. Note: According to photocopied articles accompanying the figure, Manly L. Lundberg was born in about 1908 in Reads Landing, Minnesota. He started carving figures and writing poetry after being hospitalized for a spinal injury he received during his service in the Marine Corps. He lived a simple life in a small cabin in Southern Minnesota and occasionally sold his sculptures. On one occasion, he tried without much success to sell his sculptures from a van he designed and built on a cross country trip to California. He died in his mid sixties in 1973.
