French School, 19th Century Portrait Miniature of Dr. James M. Morse. Unsigned. The sitter location and date identified from a typed label affixed to the reverse of the wood frame. Watercolor on ivory, depicting a bust-length portrait of the gentleman wearing a white shirt and stock, a cream-colored vest, and a blue jacket with brass buttons, 3 1/4 x 2 1/2 in., mounted in a period oval gilt metal locket case further mounted in a mahogany frame with gilt brass liner. Condition ; Very good. Note: The inscriptions read: This Miniature painted on ivory is of Dr. J(am)es M. Morse, first cousin of S.F.B. Morse the inventor. He was a great friend of Mayor Kingsland of New York. He was also a '49er'. It was painted in either Marseilles or Paris about 1820."
