Attributed to Moses Connor, Jr. (New Hampshire, active 1800-1832) Birth Record: Jerusha Webber Born Aug't 23, 1802. Unsigned, the back of the record inscribed in ink "A gift from a friend, and you remember the giver. Joan F. Jackman." Watercolor and ink on paper, depicting the birth inscription flanked by two fanciful birds perched on leafy branches, 9 x 7 in., in original light blue painted wooden frame. Condition: Toning. Literature: A similar birth record is illustrated in By Good Hands: New Hampshire Folk Art, cooperative exhibition catalogue with The Currier Gallery of Art, University Art Galleries, University of New Hampshire, Durham, New Hampshire, 1989, pp. 31-2. Moses Connor, Jr., was born in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, on October 25, 1774. In 1808 he moved to Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, and taught school. Good at penmanship, Connor began writing family records, which he continued for the next twenty years. By 1813, he had developed a style that included hearts, flowers, vines, diamonds and birds, most of which have large beaks. Connor died sometime after 1832. The New Hampshire Historical Society, Old Sturbridge Village, and the New York State Museum all contain examples of his work.
