Attributed to Rufus Porter (American, 1792-1884) Portrait of a Young Boston Artist. Signed "Porter." l.r., the reverse inscribed "Boston- herself a brilliant painter, died at 21." Watercolor on paper, depicting a bust-length three-quarter likeness of a young woman with curled brown hair wearing a red dress with a white shawl over one shoulder and black beaded necklace 4 1/4 x 3 1/4 in., in a later grain painted molded wood frame with gilt liner. Condition: Very good. Note: An inscription on the reverse compares the signature in this portrait to a lot pictured in the auction catalog of Bertram K. Little and Nina Fletcher Little's collection, part II, Sotheby's sale 6612, Oct. 21 and 22, 1994, lot 829. A box painted by Porter for his cousin's wife is inscribed with a period at the end of the name "Porter." as is seen in the portrait here.
