Harry A. Learned (American, 1844-1893) River Mill Scene. Signed and dated "Harry A. Learned 1869" l.r. Oil on canvas, depicting a river in a hilly rural setting with ducks and cows in the river, with a bridge crossing to a mill, beside the river, and a white house with green shutters, 23 x 30 1/8 in., unframed. Condition: Small puncture l.r., minor retouch. Note: Harry Learned was born in Boston, traveled with his family west to Kansas in 1855, and then to Colorado where they were unsuccessful in the gold rush. In 1869 Learned decided to become a full-time artist and studied in Chicago under Henry Chapman Ford, and was admitted to the Academy of Design there. He traveled throughout Colorado painting views of mining districts.
