American School, 19th Century Portrait of "Charlotte Eliza Raub born 22 Sept. 1812 Aged 7 yrs. Unsigned. Watercolor on paper, depicting the girl wearing a white dress coral bead necklace and red shoes, holding a pink rose standing on a pattered floor before red drapery with gold trim and tassel, 11 1/8 x 9 5/8 in., in a later molded wood frame. Condition: Toning, repaired tears, foxing. Provenance: Ex Edgar William and Bernice Chrysler Garbisch Collection. Note: The reverse inscribed "By 'Mr Thompson'." See N.Y. State Historical Association Volume, pp. 145-6. "Mr. Thompson" was active 1814-1819 and painted several families, including the Raub family, in the Bergen County, New Jersey area. At the bottom of the example offered here, is a ragged edge showing remnants of the girl's name inscribed in striped block letters which were done on other known examples of Thompson's work.
