Donald Harcourt De Lue (American, 1900-1988) Jason alternatively titled Jason, Triumph Over Tyranny A later casting. Signed and inscribed "DE LUE Sc 1939 (C) 1986 4/12" l.r. Gilded bronze on stone base, height 18 1/2 in. (47.0 cm). Condition: Light abrasions, minor irregularity in gilding. N.B. Donald De Lue's figurative sculptures, often symbolic or mythological, reveal his mastery of human anatomy. This figure of Jason, with one hand planting a tooth and the other raised in a symbol of triumph over war, refers to the myth of Jason and Cadmus planting the dragon's teeth to obtain the Golden Fleece. Stylistically, this work has a Kouros-type head, an archaic reference that De Lue used frequently in the 1930s and 40s.(1) The lot is accompanied by a copy of The Sculpture of Donald De Lue Gods, Prophets, and Heroes by D. Roger Howlett (Boston: David R. Godine, Publisher, Inc., 1990) (1) Howlett, D. Roger The Sculpture of Donald De Lue Gods, Prophets, and Heroes (Boston: David R.
