George Loftus Noyes (American, 1864-1954) Early Spring in the Mountains Signed "G. L. Noyes" l.r. Oil on canvas, 16 x 20 in. (40.6 x 50.8 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, unobtrusive surface grime. N.B. Born in Ontario, Canada, Noyes moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts, as a child. He studied in France, and adopted the loose brushstrokes of the French Impressionists and is far best known for his plein air landscape paintings. Upon completing his European studies, Noyes traveled extensively within the U.S. and to Mexico, often with fellow artist and friend, Frederic Edwin Church. He settled in California, where he taught at Stanford University and Winter Park, Florida, before retuning to New England.
