Thomas Hewes Hinckley (American, 1813-1896) Hunting Scene in Milton Signed and dated "T. H. Hinckley, 1868" l.l. Oil on canvas, 14 x 21 in. (35.6 x 53.3 cm), framed. Condition: Lined, retouch, fine craquelure with areas of lifting, small scattered abrasions, surface grime. N.B. Hinckley was born in Milton, Massachusetts and thought he traveled extensively to the American west and Europe, he returned regularly to his home state. He set up a studio in Milton in 1845 and often used the surrounding scenery and animals as inspiration for his paintings. This painting is closely related to, and perhaps a later version of Hinckley's The Rabbit Hunter , owned by the American Art Union and later purchased by Smith van Buren, Esq.
