Early Cloth Folk Art Doll, America, 19th century, with nose, lips and eyebrows stitched in relief, painted black-outlined eyes, black-painted twine hair coiled to plaited bun at nape of neck, the head constructed of oil-painted cloth stretched over a hessian "mold" and stitched to body at the neck, cloth body originally with similarly stiffened lower legs and arms with stitched mitten fingers, in later cotton print costume, apron and petticoat, ht. 20 1/2 in., (lacking correct left arm and right lower leg, neck re-stitched, rub on nose and tear at left temple).
