1: 600 Scale Ship Model of the German Steamer Bremen IV , built by Ron Hughes, in brass-bound glazed case, on walnut base with plaque, overall case ht. 6 x wd. 21 in. Note: Sister ships BREMEN and EUROPA , operated by Norddeutscher Lloyd, were considered the most up-to-date of express steamers in the early 1930s. In 1929, Bremen won the Blue Riband for the fastest transatlantic crossing (4 days, 18 hours, and 17 minutes). In the months leading up to the declaration of war in 1939, the steamers provided safe transport for many of the Jewish emigrants escaping Germany for America.
